Lee Hall Mansion


Lee Hall Mansion, one of the last remaining antebellum residences on the Virginia Peninsula, was built by Richard Decauter Lee, a rich and powerful Warwick County landowner. During April and May 1862, Confederate Generals John Bankhead Magruder and Joseph E. Johnston used the mansion as a command post. The Lee Hall Mansion, now a historic house museum, has authentically equipped period rooms that transport visitors back in time. Exhibits include Civil War-era artifacts such as a tablecloth from the USS Monitor. Lee Hall Mansion is located at 163 Yorktown Road in the city's northern outskirts.

The Mariners' Museum and Park, also known as America's National Maritime Museum, is a nautical and maritime historical gallery. The museum, founded in the 1930s by Archer Milton Huntington and Homer L. Ferguson, examines the origins of seafaring from the age of European expansion to the modern-day United States Navy. The museum houses the Western Hemisphere's biggest nautical library and showcases over 35,000 maritime pieces in a diverse array of interesting exhibits, including antique vessels, ship models, ancient documents, and paintings. Virginia Living Museum


The Virginia Living Museum, dubbed the state's "jewel in the crown," is a nature reserve, an animal shelter, an aquarium, a science gallery, and a wildlife sanctuary that showcases the fauna, flora, and natural beauty of Virginia. The interactive facility offers a variety of exhibits, displays, and hands-on events for visitors of all ages, including habitats for animals such as red wolves, otters, bobcats, and bald eagles, as well as the opportunity to observe the night sky in the state-of-the-art digital planetarium theater. The center includes a Butterfly Garden, a Conservation Garden, and a Green Living House, all of which contain a diverse collection of Virginia flora and native plants. Self-guided adventures of the natural gardens and the boardwalk are also available.

US Army Transportation Museum

The United States Army Transportation Museum is committed to gathering, conserving, and displaying the history of transportation in the United States Army through the display of transportation-related equipment, vehicles, and memorabilia. The museum, which is situated on the site of Fort Eustis in Newport News, has over 7,000 artifacts and 1,000 exhibit props varying from helicopters, planes, and landing craft to jeepneys, vehicles, hovercraft, and trains. The collection's highlights include the only surviving combat hovercraft and the only surviving gun truck from the Vietnam War, and also the first helicopter to take flight at the South Pole.

Newport News Park

Newport News Park is an 8,000-acre city-run park with two freshwater ponds and is one of the biggest in the United States. The gorgeous woodlands, flowering grasslands, and lovely wetlands, as well as local wildlife such as beavers, otters, deer, raccoons, and foxes, are all found in the natural oasis. A golf course, a five-star archery facility, a horse show venue with a stage, a disc golf course, a ropes and initiative course, and over 30 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails are among the recreational activities. Newport News Park is open from sunrise to sunset every day.

USS Monitor Center

The USS Monitor Center, located at the Mariners' Museum and Park, is one of the most renowned naval vessels in history. During the American Civil War, the iron-hulled steam-powered battleship was constructed for the Union Navy and played a significant responsibility across many key battles. Visitors can now take guided tours of the ship and participate in a variety of interactive activities such as walking on the deck of a full-scale replica of a Monitor and participating in a battle in the state-of-the-art high-technology battle theater. The attraction is available all year and offers both self-guided and guided tours of the vessel.

Virginia War Museum

Located in Huntington Park Beach, the Virginia War Museum is dedicated to documenting American military history through several collections of unusual historical antiques dating back to 1775. The museum houses exhibitions and displays featuring weapons, vehicles, personal artifacts, uniforms, documents, posters, and other U.S. military-related items from 1775 through the present. Signature displays include a piece of the outer wall from Dachau Concentration Camp and the Berlin Wall, and photographic and articles exhibits such as Marches Toward Freedom and Women at War. The museum hosts a variety of evening programs and special events throughout the year.

Endview Plantation

Endview Plantation is an 18th-century farm that emphasizes the area's historical and cultural importance. Endview Plantation, established in 1769, was the official residence of Dr. Humphrey Harwood Curtis, in which he started his medical profession before the house was converted into a hospital during the Confederacy. The house is now a museum with an insightful display of colonial and Civil War life, and tourists can discover the house on guided tours to understand more about life during the Antebellum age.

Newport News Victory Arch

The Newport News Victory Arch, currently based in Victory Landing Park, was established in 1919 to commemorate those who served in the American armed forces during times of war. The arch was rebuilt in 1962, and an eternal torch donated by the American Legion was installed on Memorial Day in 1969. Today, the Newport News Victory Arch continues to serve as a monument with a perpetually burning eternal flame for all of the armed forces' men and women.
